Preparing for college now!

Counselors’ Corner

By Carla Sacksteder and Tish Stevenson

With summer vacation coming to an end and the new school year just around the corner, we would like to take this opportunity to welcome back returning students and to welcome the new students to Godwin Heights, including the incoming class of 2014. Each year presents new opportunities to students at Godwin Heights High School, and we hope all students take advantage of them.

We would like to remind all 2010-2011 high school students to look at their class schedules carefully. Students should make certain they are not scheduled for a class that goes in chronological order, if they failed the prerequisite during the winter/spring semester, and did not make it up in summer school. Students who are in that position will need to reschedule the class they failed, if it is a graduation requirement. If there are any changes that need to be made to schedules, there will be one week at the beginning of the semester during which the students may make schedule changes (each semester has a one week time period for schedule changes). Students must make changes during the one week to be able to change their schedules for the semester. If a schedule change is not made during that
time, the change will not occur. Additionally, changes to year-long classes need to be made at the beginning of the year! Please be aware that some changes may require the approval of the Principal, Mr. Tolson.

One class that will still be in place during this next year will be Intervention Time. As you have read from Mr. Tolson’s information, Intervention Time is being modified for this year. One aspect of it that we need to address is students who are taking AP classes. Students who are in AP Calculus and AP English Literature will have an extended time to ensure that they do well in their classes. Some students have both classes and at this point, the students who have both are placed in Mr. Santilli’s AP Calculus IT. If you have both AP Calculus and AP English Literature and would prefer Ms. VanderWeide’s AP English Literature IT, please let Ms. Sacksteder or Ms. Stevenson know so the switch can be made.

Further, if any student took a summer school class outside of the Godwin Heights School District, the student and/or parent needs to make certain that the Career and Counseling Center receives a copy of the grade the student earned in summer school from the school where the course was taken. This will ensure that proper credit is given to the student.

There are two deadlines that juniors and seniors need to be aware of are, August 6, and September 17, 2010, which are the postmark deadlines for sending in the ACT registration information for the September 11 and October 23 tests. Seniors need to be certain to sign up for one of these tests, if they have not yet achieved the ACT score they want (or if they have not yet earned the score of 23 to qualify them for the Michigan Competitive Scholarship, which is a State of Michigan scholarship). They want to be certain to take the test as soon as possible so they may send their scores to the institutions where they want to apply. Please remember that the counselors may waive two test fees for the ACT during a student’s junior and senior years, if the student qualifies financially (free or reduced lunches allow students to qualify, along with other financial considerations).

Finally, we hope that all of our students have a great and productive school year. If you have any questions, please contact us at 252-2050.
